Getting your photos taken can be super exciting, but let’s be real – it can also feel a little, well, awkward sometimes. I hear it all the time – ‘I don’t know how to pose!’ or ‘I feel so awkward!’ And guess what? That’s totally normal! But here’s the good news: getting amazing photos isn’t about being a professional model, it’s about feeling comfortable, having fun, and knowing a few simple tricks. As your photographer, my biggest goal is for you to feel incredible during your photoshoot, and for your photos to truly capture you. So, let’s banish those awkward vibes and get you ready to absolutely crush your next photoshoot!”
That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help you conquer those pre-shoot jitters and feel confident in front of the camera. These aren’t rigid rules, just fun tips to help you move naturally and express your incredible personality. Let’s dive in!
I. Embrace Natural Expressions!
Often, the most beautiful photos are the ones where you’re just being yourself. Don’t feel like you have to plaster on a fake smile or stare intensely into the lens.
* Tip: Think about something funny, a favorite song, or even a silly inside joke. A genuine laugh or a thoughtful expression will always shine through.
* Example: Instead of a forced grin, try a slight smirk, a big toothy laugh, or even a soft, pensive look. I’ll be there to capture all these genuine moments!
* Practice: Look in a mirror and try out different “real” smiles – not the ones you practice for school photos, but the ones that come naturally when you’re genuinely happy.
II. Don’t Be a Statue!
Standing still can feel stiff. Incorporating subtle movements makes your photos dynamic and natural.
* Tip: Shift your weight from one foot to the other, gently sway, or take a step towards/away from the camera.
* Example: Don’t look directly at the camera the whole time. Glance over your shoulder, look down at your feet, or chat with me as we move.
* Practice: Put on your favorite song and just move! Notice how your body naturally shifts and how your clothes move with you.
III. What to Do With Your Hands (The Age-Old Question!)
Ah, the hands! They can feel so awkward if you don’t know what to do with them.
* Tip 1: The “Soft Touch”
* Example: Lightly touch your face, hair, collar, or the brim of a hat. Gently rest one hand on your hip or in your pocket.
* Tip 2: Engage with Your Surroundings
* Example: Lean against a wall, hold onto a railing, or interact with a prop like a book, or instrument.
* Tip 3: Natural Folds
* Example: Cross your arms loosely (not defensively!), or bring one hand up to your chin in a thoughtful pose.
* Avoid: Stiff fingers, balled fists, or hands just dangling aimlessly.
IV. Angles are Your Friends!
You don’t have to face the camera head-on. Slight turns and shifts can make a huge difference.
* Tip: Turn your body slightly to the side (about a 45-degree angle) instead of squaring up to the camera. This often creates a more flattering silhouette.
* Example: If you’re standing, try turning one shoulder towards the camera and looking back over it. If sitting, angle your hips slightly.
* Practice: Stand in front of a mirror and turn slightly. Notice how your shape changes and what angles you like best.
V. Lean In, Lean On, Lean Back!
Using your environment can make you feel more grounded and comfortable. * Tip: Don’t just stand; lean against a wall, a tree, a railing, or even sit on the ground.
* Example: A casual lean against a brick wall can look cool and relaxed. Sitting with your knees bent and arms draped over them can be a great natural pose.
* Why it works: Leaning provides support and takes away the pressure of “holding” a pose, making you feel more natural.
VI. The Power of Props
Sometimes, a simple prop can give you something natural to interact with and make you feel less self-conscious.
* Tip: Think about things you naturally use or love: a favorite book, a skateboard, a jacket, or sunglasses.
* Example: Reading a book, adjusting your sunglasses, or simply holding your jacket can give your hands and eyes a natural focal point.
* Discuss with me: If you have an idea for a prop, let me know! We can incorporate it into your session.
VII. Most Importantly: Breathe, Relax, and Be YOU!
This is the golden rule. My job is to capture your authentic self, so let your personality shine!
* Tip: Take a few deep breaths before we start. Listen to your favorite music on the way to the shoot. Remember that this is your time to feel amazing.
* Example: Don’t worry about being perfect. If a pose feels weird, tell me! We’ll adjust. The more relaxed you are, the more genuine your photos will be.
* Remember: We’re going to have fun! This isn’t a performance; it’s a collaboration to get incredible photos that reflect who you truly are.
Pre-Shoot Homework (Optional, but fun!):
* Mirror Time: Spend 5-10 minutes in front of a mirror. Play your favorite music and just move. Try out different expressions and notice what feels natural.
* Pinterest Inspiration: Look up “high school senior photoshoot poses” or “candid teen photos” on Pinterest. Save some images you like and share them with me! This helps me understand your style.
* Outfit Check: Wear something you feel absolutely fantastic and comfortable in. When you love your outfit, your confidence naturally goes up!
